Site Superintendent
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated Site Superintendent to lead natural resource and outdoor recreation construction projects throughout North Carolina and the surrounding region. Work takes place in remote and environmentally sensitive areas and requires strong leadership, organization, problem-solving ability, and a commitment to safety.
Our projects support public lands, outdoor recreation, and natural resource management. Clients may include organizations and agencies such as North Carolina State Parks, the U.S. Forest Service, and the National Park Service. The Site Superintendent must be able to understand and follow each client’s plans, specifications, safety requirements, and applicable state or federal standards.
The selected candidate will begin with a structured training period to learn Black Diamond Designs’ construction methods, field operations, and project standards. Once trained, the Site Superintendent will independently coordinate crews, subcontractors, equipment, materials, schedules, and daily jobsite activities to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality projects.
Previous superintendent experience is preferred but not required. We are looking for someone with relevant education or construction experience who wants to learn our work, take ownership, and develop into a capable field leader.
Key Responsibilities
Field Operations
Oversee daily field operations on assigned construction projects.Crew Leadership
Lead field crews, equipment operators, subcontractors, and suppliers.Project Planning & Logistics
Plan upcoming work and coordinate labor, equipment, materials, deliveries, and site logistics.Plans & Specifications
Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and project schedules, including applicable state and federal requirements.Quality & Performance
Ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project requirements and company standards.Natural Resource Construction
Supervise construction and maintenance work involving public lands, outdoor recreation areas, habitats, and natural resources.Project Execution
Support projects such as trails, campgrounds, fishing and boating access, boardwalks, bridges, erosion control, grading, drainage, habitat improvements, and general site maintenance.Safety & Compliance
Conduct daily safety meetings and enforce company, client, and regulatory safety requirements.Safety Leadership
Maintain a proactive safety mindset in every aspect of the job. Identify hazards, correct unsafe conditions, and ensure crews, subcontractors, visitors, and the public remain protected around active work areas.Daily Documentation
Maintain accurate daily reports covering labor, equipment usage, production, deliveries, site conditions, and project photographs.Schedule Management
Monitor schedules, identify potential delays, and communicate project needs to the Project Manager.Client & Partner Coordination
Coordinate with clients, inspectors, engineers, property owners, subcontractors, and project partners.Public Interaction & Jobsite Access
Communicate politely and professionally with members of the public while firmly maintaining jobsite boundaries and safety requirements. Prevent unauthorized entry into active work areas and redirect visitors when necessary.Layout & Project Closeout
Assist with layout, field measurements, material tracking, quantity verification, and project closeout.Company Resources

Initial Training and Development
The Site Superintendent will begin with a hands-on training period designed to build a thorough understanding of Black Diamond
Designs' operations and expectations. Training will include:
Company construction methods, quality standards
Jobsite safety and environmental requirements
Reading and applying construction plans
State, federal, and client-specific specifications
Crew and subcontractor coordination
Daily planning, production management
Scheduling and material planning
Field documentation and reporting
Client, inspector, and public communication
Equipment and site logistics
Problem-solving, and field decision-making
The length of the training period will depend on the candidate's experience and demonstrated readiness. Once prepared, the Site Superintendent will take full responsibility for independently managing assigned projects.
Qualifications
Relevant construction experience, education, or technical training.
Education in construction management, civil engineering technology, environmental science, natural resources, agricultural engineering, forestry, soil science, landscape construction, or a related field is preferred.
Previous experience as a superintendent, assistant superintendent, foreman, or field supervisor is preferred but not required.
Experience in natural resource, environmental, heavy civil, grading, stormwater, utility, agricultural, recreational, or landscape construction is helpful.
Strong leadership potential and a willingness to learn.
Dependable, organized, and able to take ownership of assigned responsibilities.
Ability to communicate effectively with crews, subcontractors, clients, inspectors, project managers, and members of the public.
Ability to remain professional, respectful, and firm when enforcing jobsite access and safety requirements.
Ability to read construction plans or a willingness to learn.
Comfortable using a smartphone, email, photographs, videos, and digital reporting tools.
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Ability to pass any applicable pre-employment screening requirements.
Must be based in North Carolina and able to travel approximately 80–90% of the time, including overnight and extended jobsite stays.
Preferred Knowledge and Experience
Experience in any of the following is helpful but not required:
Outdoor recreation or public-land construction
Trails, campgrounds, fishing access, or boating access
Grading and earthwork
Erosion and sediment control
Stormwater and drainage construction
Heavy equipment operations
Surveying or construction layout
Habitat improvement and site stabilization
Environmental permit compliance
State or federal construction projects
OSHA, First Aid, or North Carolina erosion-control certifications
Physical and Work Requirements
Work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, mud, and changing weather conditions.
Work around wildlife, insects, and aquatic species that may include bees, wasps, ticks, mosquitoes, snakes, fish, birds, and other animals commonly encountered in remote natural environments.
Work around heavy equipment and active construction operations.
Walk and work on steep, uneven, wet, or heavily vegetated terrain.
Stand, bend, climb, and conduct field inspections for extended periods.
Lift and carry up to 50 pounds when necessary.
Travel regularly to remote project locations.
Stay near project sites for extended assignments when required.
Work extended hours or occasional weekends when project schedules or site conditions require it.

Vehicle During Training
During the initial training period, the employee may be required to use a personal vehicle for approved company travel. Approved business mileage will be reimbursed according to the company’s current mileage-reimbursement policy.
After successfully completing the training period and demonstrating readiness for independent project assignments, the Site Superintendent will be provided an assigned company vehicle.

A successful Site Superintendent is dependable, curious, organized, safety-focused, and willing to take ownership. During the initial training period, this person will learn how Black Diamond Designs plans, builds, documents, and completes its work.
Once trained, the Site Superintendent will be expected to lead crews, manage daily field operations, maintain a safe and productive jobsite, communicate clearly, and deliver quality work within the project’s required period of performance.
