Carpentry Construction Specialist
Position Overview
We are seeking a Carpentry Construction Specialist to support complex outdoor infrastructure projects including bridges, boardwalks, and remote construction sites. This role focuses on structural carpentry and timber construction used to build durable infrastructure in rugged or difficult-to-access environments.
Carpentry Construction Specialists work closely with field crews and supervisors to construct and install structural wood elements including bridge framing, decking systems, railings, and elevated walkways while maintaining high standards of safety and craftsmanship.
The ideal candidate brings strong construction experience along with advanced carpentry skills and the ability to work effectively in remote or physically demanding environments.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Carpentry & Timber Construction
Construct and install structural wood elements including bridge framing, boardwalk decking, rail systems, and elevated walkway componentsFraming & Structural Layout
Measure, layout, and assemble structural framing components according to construction plans to ensure proper alignment and structural integrityTimber Fabrication & Material Preparation
Cut, shape, and prepare lumber and heavy timber components for installation in field construction environmentsStructural Hardware Installation
Install structural fasteners, brackets, plates, and hardware used in heavy timber and outdoor infrastructure constructionExcavation
Perform precision excavation using rock cutting, drilling, and breaking techniques in steep or confined environments with hand tools, hydraulic breakers, and specialized equipmentConcrete Placement
Assist with structural concrete formwork, reinforcement placement, and controlled pours in challenging terrain and weather conditionsSteel Erection
Assemble and install structural steel components in limited-access areas, often using rigging systems and aerial liftsTool & Equipment Operation
Operate drills, saws, hydraulic tools, and other construction equipment used on remote project sitesHelicopter Coordination
Assist with helicopter-supported construction including load rigging, safety spotting, and precision material placement in accordance with FAA and site safety standards (experience preferred, but not required)Safety & Environmental Compliance
Follow OSHA safety regulations, fall protection standards, and Leave No Trace environmental practices in protected natural areasCrew Communication
Understand work directions, communicate effectively with supervisors and crew members, and maintain situational awareness on active construction sites
Minimum Qualifications
2+ years of construction experience with an emphasis on structural carpentry or timber construction
Experience building bridges, boardwalks, decks, or other structural wood systems including decking systems and heavy timber construction
Ability to read construction drawings and interpret technical specifications
Comfortable working at heights and in remote, physically demanding environments
Proficiency with carpentry tools including saws, drills, and other power tools
Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs across uneven terrain
Ability to work outdoors in changing weather conditions
Ability to follow job site safety procedures and OSHA safety standards
Ability to understand work directions and communicate effectively with supervisors and crew members
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
Chainsaw certifications
Wilderness First Aid or Standard First Aid
Experience working on public lands (e.g., National or State Parks)
Familiarity with erosion control, water mitigation, and environmental best practices
Welding or fabrication experience
CDL License
Working Conditions
Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including steep, wet, and uneven terrain
Work is physically demanding and requires standing, bending, crouching, lifting, and carrying loads up to 50 pounds over difficult terrain
Employees frequently work on natural ground surfaces and in rugged backcountry environments
Work environments may include noise, dust, grease, and conditions typical of active construction sites
Employees regularly work near heavy equipment, moving machinery, and suspended loads
Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, harnesses, and other safety gear is required daily
Travel to project sites is required and may include extended stays near the job site
Lodging may be provided through Airbnb accommodations when available or through camping near remote project locations when necessary
Compensation & Benefits
Monday through Thursday work schedule
